Best Time to Visit the Sahara in Morocco
The best time to visit the Sahara in Morocco is spring or autumn: March to May and September to November, with April-May and September-October the most comfortable months. Summer daytime heat is intense and winter nights are cold, but each season has its own appeal; the trade-off is between comfort and solitude.

Why timing matters in the desert
The Moroccan Sahara is a land of extremes, and the time of year changes what a night in the dunes feels like. In spring and autumn the desert balances warm days with mild evenings, the classic and comfortable window that most first-time visitors should aim for.

Season by season

Spring · March to May

Summer · June to August

Autumn · September to November

Winter · December to February
Spring: March to May
Spring is one of the two best seasons. Days are warm, nights are mild and the light on the dunes is excellent for photography. Wind and sandstorms can happen, so keep plans flexible and ask us about the forecast before you travel. Occasional rain can make the desert greener than you expect, especially in March and early April. April and May are the most reliable months.
Summer: June to August
Summer is very hot. We still run trips, with early starts, a long rest in the shade in the middle of the day and activities in the evening. Nights stay warm. If your dates are flexible, spring or autumn is more comfortable.
Autumn: September to November
Autumn is the other best season, with warm days and pleasant evenings. September and October are the sweet spot. November is cooler and quieter, and still good if you pack a warm layer.
Winter: December to February
Winter days are mild and nights can be cold, but the skies are clear and it is the best season for stargazing. Our camps help you stay warm:
- Blankets and bedding
- Heating in the luxury tents
- A campfire in the evening
Bring warm layers for the night and early morning.
Ramadan & school holidays
Two calendar effects to plan around. Ramadan shifts about 10 to 11 days earlier each year as the Islamic calendar follows the moon, so it falls in different months over time. Trips still run during Ramadan: daytime services are quieter while people fast, evenings are lively, and we plan meals and timing with you so the route works.
School holidays in Morocco and across Europe follow each year's published schedules and can fill desert camps in holiday weeks. If your dates are flexible, checking ahead helps you avoid the busiest camp weekends.
What to pack, by season
Layers are the golden rule, since the desert's day-night swing is the biggest surprise for most visitors. Pack a warm layer even in summer, because nights drop quickly after sunset.
Spring & autumn
- Light day layers plus a mid-weight jacket for the evenings
- Hat, sunglasses and sun cream for the midday sun
- Comfortable walking shoes for sand and gravel
- A light scarf against wind and sand
Summer
- Loose, breathable, light-coloured clothing
- A light cover-up or long layer for the cooler evening
- A refillable bottle to keep you very hydrated
Winter
- Warm layers, a proper jacket and a beanie for cold nights
- Gloves and warm socks for early-morning sunrises
- Sun protection still, because the sun is strong even in winter
Our advice
Aim for April-May or September-October for the most comfortable desert nights, within the broader March-May and September-November windows. Book ahead if your dates fall in a school-holiday week or over Christmas and New Year. If you can only travel in high summer or midwinter, come with the right gear and a realistic plan: the Moroccan Sahara is spectacular whatever the weather, and quieter out of season.

Frequently asked
Quick answers
Is the Sahara too hot to visit in summer?
Summer days are intensely hot, but travel is possible if you're used to heat, and plan activities early and rely on shade. Most visitors prefer spring or autumn.
How cold does the desert get at night?
Nights can drop near freezing in winter months, so warm layers are essential then. In spring and autumn evenings are mild and comfortable.
Does the Moroccan Sahara have a rainy season?
Rain is rare and light overall, though short showers can occur in winter and early spring. Most days are dry with clear skies whatever the season.
When does Ramadan fall, and does it affect desert tours?
Ramadan's dates change each year, moving about 10 days earlier annually. Tours still run during Ramadan; expect quieter daytime services and livelier evenings.
Are desert camps busier during school holidays?
Yes, camps and popular nights can fill quickly in published holiday weeks. Booking ahead around those dates helps secure the camp night you want.
Is spring windy in the desert?
It can be. Spring occasionally brings wind and sandstorms, so we keep the plan flexible and check the forecast before you travel.
Does the price change by season?
Yes. Rates are higher in April, May, September and October, and during Christmas, New Year and school holiday weeks. Tell us your dates and we will quote your trip.
