Agafay or Merzouga: Which Desert Should You Choose?
If you're short on time, Agafay suits you, since it's a relaxed desert of stone a quick drive from Marrakech. If you want the classic experience of Morocco's great dunes, Merzouga is your answer, and it needs more days on the road.
Two deserts, very different trips
Both are beautiful, but they answer different questions. Agafay is a rocky, rolling desert plateau about an hour from Marrakech, perfect for a half- or full-day taste of the desert without giving up a day of sightseeing. Merzouga, at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes in the Moroccan Sahara, is the desert of postcards: tall orange dunes, camel treks at sunset and nights under the stars. The catch is distance; the Moroccan Sahara is a proper journey from Marrakech.

Agafay
The near desert: stone, space and calm, an easy trip from the red city.

Merzouga
The great dunes of the Moroccan Sahara: the classic, unforgettable desert experience.

How to choose, by who you are
Families · choose Agafay
No long drives, easy to keep kids happy, and you can be back in Marrakech the same day.
Couples · depends on time
With a day to spare, Agafay is a lovely romantic escape; with more, a night among the Merzouga dunes is unforgettable.
Short stays · choose Agafay
City breaks can't spare two days on the road, and Agafay gives you the desert feel in hours.
First-timers · choose Merzouga
If it's your first (and maybe only) shot at the Moroccan Sahara, the big dunes are the real thing.
Why not both deserts?
They're not mutually exclusive. A common route combines the two: begin with an Agafay afternoon when you land in Marrakech, then head south for fuller desert trips from Marrakech that reach the Moroccan Sahara, overnighting in the true dunes at Merzouga. It's a lovely way to build up to the main event and to use a short first day productively.

Frequently asked
Quick answers
Is Agafay a real desert?
Yes, but it's a stone desert rather than sand dunes, a dry, moon-like plateau that still gives a genuine desert feel close to Marrakech.
How many days do I need for Merzouga?
At minimum two days and one night round-trip from Marrakech, though three days gives a much less rushed experience.
Can I travel to the Moroccan Sahara with children?
Yes, with a few extra rest stops. Many families do a shorter version, or choose Agafay if they'd rather avoid the long drive.
What's the best time of year for either desert?
Spring and autumn are ideal for both. Summers are very hot in the Moroccan Sahara; Agafay works better on a cooler day.
Can we do both in one trip?
Yes, start with an Agafay stop, then continue south to spend a night in the dunes at Merzouga on a longer Marrakech loop.
