About this tour
Morocco’s highlights in one loop from Casablanca: two days over the blue north through Rabat, Chefchaouen and the medinas of Fes, the caravan roads across the Middle Atlas to a camel ride and a nomad-camp night in the Erg Chebbi, the Todra Gorges and kasbahs of the south, guided Marrakech, and a breezy finish on the Atlantic at Essaouira before the coast road home.
Itinerary: 10 days
Casablanca, Rabat & on to Chefchaouen
The great Hassan II Mosque, then the capital’s Oudaya Kasbah and Hassan Tower before continuing through Ouezzane to Chefchaouen for the night.
Chefchaouen, Volubilis & Fes
Explore blue Chefchaouen, then drive to Fes with a stop at the Roman ruins of Volubilis, overnighting in Fes.
A full day in Fes
With a local guide: the medina of Fes el Bali, Al Qaraouine University and the Jewish quarter, a largely car-free maze where goods move by mule.
Fes to Merzouga
Along the old caravan roads past the Middle Atlas cedar forest and Barbary macaques, lunch in Midelt, then the high plain and the Ziz Valley’s date groves to Merzouga for the night.
Rissani, Khamlia & a desert night
The ancient market of Rissani and a herbal pharmacy, a pizza lunch at Khamlia with Gnaoua music, then a camel trek across the golden Erg Chebbi to a nomad camp beneath the stars.
Merzouga, the Todra & the Dades
Wake for the dunes’ sunrise and trek back to the village, then via Rissani to the Todra Gorges, the highest and narrowest in Morocco, before the Dades Valley’s sand castles for the night.
Ait Ben Haddou to Marrakech
Through the Valley of the Roses and the Skoura palm grove and Ouarzazate to the UNESCO kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, then over the Tizi n’Tichka to Marrakech.
Exploring Marrakech
With a local guide: the Koutoubia minaret, the Saadian Tombs, the Bahia Palace and the Ben Youssef School, the medina alleys to Jemaa el-Fna, then the Majorelle Gardens.
Marrakech to Essaouira
Toward the breezy Atlantic, photographing goats in argan trees and visiting a Berber women’s cooperative, then a beachfront lunch and a guided walk around Essaouira.
