About this tour
Two very different faces of Morocco in a single southward sweep: first the north, with the blue-washed Rif town of Chefchaouen, the Roman ruins of Volubilis and the imperial city of Meknes, then the Middle Atlas to a camel-and-camp night in the Erg Chebbi, before the Todra and Dades gorges and a high, winding crossing into Marrakech. Private door to door.
Itinerary: 6 days
Fes to Chefchaouen
Drive north and wander Chefchaouen’s blue-and-white medina and its market of local handicrafts against the Rif mountains, overnighting in a hotel.
Volubilis, Meknes & back to Fes
Explore the Roman ruins of Volubilis, lunch in imperial Meknes by the historic walls and Bab el-Mansour, then return to Fes for a night in a traditional riad.
Fes to Merzouga
Through the Middle Atlas past Ifrane and Azrou’s cedar forest and Barbary apes, lunch in Midelt, then over the Tizi-n-Talghomt and the Ziz gorge past the Hassan al-Dakhil reservoir and Erfoud to Merzouga. Hotel night.
A night in the Sahara
Meet nomads and the Gnaoua, in season visit the birds of Lake Merzouga, then drive to the camp among the Erg Chebbi for a dune sunset, dinner and a night in or under a tent.
Merzouga to the Dades Gorges
Camel back after a dune-top sunrise, then west through Erfoud and Tinjdad to walk the Todra Gorge canyon walls before the Dades Valley for dinner and the night.
The kasbahs to Marrakech
Along the road of a thousand kasbahs past Kelaa M’Gouna to Ouarzazate, lunch at the UNESCO kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, then over the Tizi n’Tichka with a stop at an argan-oil cooperative into Marrakech.
