About this tour

The classic Fes to Marrakech crossing with a full day surrendered to the Sahara: monkeys in the Middle Atlas cedars, the palm-lined Ziz Valley, a desert day of Gnaoua music and an off-road tour of the dunes ending in a night in a nomadic tent, then west to the Todra and Dades gorges and the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs to Ait Ben Haddou before the High Atlas down to Marrakech.

Itinerary: 4 days

Fes to Merzouga

Monkeys among the cedars near Ifrane, lunch in Midelt, then over the Tizi-n-Talremt pass and along the Ziz Valley oasis past Er Rachidia and Erfoud to Merzouga for evening light over the dunes. Hotel night.

A day in the Erg Chebbi

Live Gnaoua music at Khamlia, an off-road tour across the dunes and tea with nomads, then a camel ride into the heart of the dunes at sunset and a night beneath the stars in a nomadic tent.

The Todra & Dades gorges

After a desert sunrise, travel via Rissani to Erfoud’s fossil-marble workshops, lunch in the Todra Gorges, then drive the Dades Valley to dinner and an overnight hotel stay.

The kasbahs to Marrakech

Along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs past the Skoura palm grove to Ouarzazate, then the UNESCO kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou above the river before crossing the High Atlas to finish in Marrakech.

Desert camps & seasons

Two ways to camp and a window of best seasons under this stretch of sky.

Camp type. Choose the authentic Berber camp with traditional tents and mattresses on the sand, or a fixed comfort camp with real beds, private bathrooms and hot showers. Both are within walking distance of the Erg Chebbi dunes and include dinner and breakfast round the fire.

Best seasons. October to April is ideal, with warm days and clear cool nights. Summer is manageable with an early start: we’ll point you to the best dates for your trip.

Help & answers

Common questions

When is the best time to travel?

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) keep the days pleasant and the desert nights cool.

Why choose four days over three?

The extra day gives a full day in the Sahara, with Gnaoua music, an off-road dune tour and a proper desert sunset night, rather than a quick stopover.

Is the camel ride and camp included?

Yes, the camel trek into the dunes and the night in a nomadic tent are both part of the tour.

Can the route be reversed?

Yes, the same route also runs from Marrakech to Fes to fit your travel plans.

Is the desert safe to travel in?

Yes, the route is well travelled and safe; follow your guide’s advice, keep hydrated and respect local customs.
